Blessed by the weather gods, amazing performances, arts & comedy galore and joined by a wonderful bunch of music lovers from around the nation, The Falls Music & Arts Festival was truly the highlight on many a musical calendar.
The pilgrimages down south found many dancing in the sun and dipping in the ocean at the nearby beach havens, whilst others found solace in the shade of the Otway Rainforest canopy in Lorne or tucked away under one of the great gums in Tasmania in between sets.
A superb combination of diverse performers from the great Paul Kelly, the infectiously profound Blackalicious, the regal Kings of Leon, the pop-to-trot and energetic offerings from The Go! Team, and the dance-a-delic maestro’s Groove Armada, to the soulful renditions of Angus & Julia Stone, and Old Man River; not forgetting the shimmy-worthy, polka-dotted posse The Pipettes! Black Rebel Motorcycle Club rocked, riffed and rambled a hazy black fog of whiskey drenched perfection – and speaking of whiskey – The Whiskey Go Go’s lads sure put on a rollicking parade.
An honorable mention must go to Girl Talk – he is a true mix, mish-mash master – and my goodness it was entertaining watching some of you guys up there dancing with him as he melodically pasted his collage together; in-ter-est-ing dance moves! It was an honor to have Kev Carmody grace us with his memorable performance and indeed a specialty to have Neville Staples’ Specials joined by Ranking Roger of The Beat – a true historic moment in the Falls 15 year long history.
The intricate design and combination of arts, comedy, yoga, nest building, dance, painting and performance found in a little piece of paradise we call “The Village” was packed full of arts’n’laughs. This precious and unique gem of a festival within a festival at The Falls Arts Village was a lavish treat to behold. Featuring puppetry from The Snuff Puppets Dancing Cow Show and The Shitt Family Puppet Show, whilst channeling all things sassy were the cabaret and burlesque styling’s from The Caravan of Love and The Dilapidated Diva. The Village played host to other such wondrous beings as Circus Horrificus, & Roadkill Rodeo, alongside live art from Pol The Painter who ably captured the painterly realities of the fest we call ‘Falls’. Long after the afghan tents and festoon lighting came down and the Grande entrance was trucked out, were people still whispering of our best kept secret they had discovered on their meanderings.
So, another box-full of memories of our time in the sunshine at The Falls Music & Arts Festival, 2007. As we shake, rattle and roll (Big Joe Turner style) well into this fine year, and as we plot, plan, and combine all the right ingredients to make ‘oh eight’ an exceptional one, ensure you take a wee stroll down memory lane and peruse the great captured moments of the fest as procured by the wonderful photographers at Marion Bay, Tasmania and Lorne, Victoria in the website gallery
In case you haven’t already, ensure you subscribe to the Falls website for artist and festival updates and info on how to get your 2008 tickets (and so we can send you more love letters).
